Aldi Wine Buyers Blog
Aldi is not high on my list of wine shops - in fact I have no idea where the nearest Aldi store is to me. I can’t recall ever seeing a wine from their range appear on a ‘recommended’ list either. The fact they only have 45 wines listed might go some why to explain their lack of exposure.
Interestingly though the wine buyer has set up a blog detailing his selections and reasoning behind which wines are selected. Just two posts so far mind one being a general introduction the other, details the lists structure. Kudos to the wine buyer for setting up a blog but why no name? Shame he has to hide behind anonymity.
Another reason for the lack of exposure perhaps is the price of Aldi’s wine offerings. Most are around the £2.79 - £3.99 price point with just one bottle, a Chablis, reaching the dizzy heights of £7.99.

Aldi has more to offer in its wine section than you would think and I would urge people to visit. The Ile La Forge Merlot, Vin de Pays d’Oc ‘04 at £ 3.99 is a particularly good buy, as is their Viognier.
Another on to look out for is-
Wakefield Promised Land, Shiraz Cabernet 2004, Aus. Aldi @ £4.99
This has all the credentials of a big, bold Oz blend including the 14.5% alc, what you get is a mid-bodied balancing act seldom found in this style. I hunted this down in Oddbins last year after it picked up a few awards (Decanter WWA Trophy among others), it sells for £6.99 and is well worth a go at this price if you are a fan of Oz blends.
I was amazed to see it in Aldi today for £4.99, particularly as it was the ’04.
They also had stock of the Unwooded Chardonnay @ £4.99 (also sells for £6.99 in Oddbins).
I find Aldi offers consistently high quality products at genuinely low prices unlike most other supermarkets. And, oh joy, no piped muzak!
The bag in box vin du pays shiraz is highly quaffable and I say great value at £11 less the obligatory penny. Their bog standard whisky and gin aren’t bad either.
I just wish Tesco et al would stop their relentless propaganda about how cheap they are and use Aldi as a price comparison. But of course they won’t, will they!
In case you think that the reason for my ebullience is that I work for Aldi, I don’t: this is a genuine message of praise from a real impartial customer who has been most pleased with the quality and standard of service from our local Aldi store.
Forget this curious supermarket snobbery which eschews Aldi; it’s good stuff. But please support your local traders too!
I got completely fed up with trying endless Supermarket Special Offers, only to find the bargain products at half price were usually half past their best or over inflated beforehand. We now drink Aldi Cellier du Rhone as our standard tipple. Its not quite as good as the one it replaced in their range last year but at about £3:50 a bottle you have to go a long way to beat this reliable Cotes du Rhone. At £6 you would not be disapointed
Great reviews I’d love to try some, but I’m vegetarian. I’ve checked Aldi.co.uk it doesn’t say which wines are vegi. The labels don’t say either. Any suggestions.
Aldi wines are great - I tried the ones which had won an award - sparkling white (Cremant du Jura) and Il le Forge Cab Sav .
