I always envy the French for the ease with which they can get hold of good French wines direct from the grower - either by mail order or visiting the vineyard. There are also numerous wine fairs around the country where you can meet the winemaker, sample his or her wines and pick up a few cases at vineyard gate prices. The downside is that the French simply do not have the huge range of wines from other parts of the world to choose from - but hey, it would take some time to exhaust the scope of what the French can offer, both in traditional styles and in exciting new approaches which a new generation are creating. Don’t fall for the idea that French wines are boring - there are certainly over-priced and poor quality wines from France, but there are also many gems and suprises to be found.

But from 21-23 November 2008 French wine growers are coming to London’s Barbican - offering tastings and purchases at producer prices!

Over 130 authentic and traditional wine-growers from all the French wine-producing regions will present more than 500 wines. The event is open to the public and advance tickets cost just £10, which includes unlimited tasting, as well as the opportunity to purchase at producer prices.
All of the French wine-producing regions will be represented, with wines from Bordeaux and south-western France, Burgundy, Champagne, the Rhone Valley, Provence, Corsica, Languedoc Roussillon, the Loire Valley and Alsace. There will also be producers of organic wines, as well as British wine-growers based in France.

You can go online and get a voucher which will entitle you to half-price entry - i.e. just £10 for the day and the opportunity to taste some of over 500 wines - and stock up for the festive season!
