New Austrian arrivals at Nick Dobson Wines
I always applaud those wine merchants (large and small) who are adventurous and try to offer something rather different. Nick Dobson continues to do this well, with a new selection of wines from Austria in addition to his other explorations into Switzerland, Germany (Mosel) and southern Burgundy.
Amongst the new arrivals is some Austrian Sekt (sparking wine) from Stift Klosterneuburg, a 900 year old Augustinian Monastery near Vienna:-
Cuvée comprising 60 percent Welschriesling and 40 percent Grüner Veltliner. Its fragrant fruit aroma is invigorating and refreshing. (£10.95)
More Sekt from Weingut Steininger in the Kamptal:
These are of particular interest as they are not only superlative quality, but made from a wide range of different grape varieties, not often seen in sparkling form - such as a Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé Sekt and a Sauvignon Blanc Sekt.
So if you are really looking for something a little different, and seldom seen on a supermarket shelf, then it could be worth a look:

Organi.co.uk
Lovers of wine and all things organic can rejoice at the launch of Organi.co.uk – the new website dedicated solely to first class organic and biodynamic wines that offers a truly exclusive and unique selection of organic and biodynamic wines and champagnes.
The website helps “discerning online shoppers find organic wine for every occasion” Purchases must be in cases of 12, which can be one of several pre-mixed selections or select themselves.
Run by the Jackson family, Peter, Sue and son Chris, Organi.co.uk offers a very specialised and unique collection of organic wines brought together over a period of years. The Jacksons take pride in building personal relationships with only those farmers and vineyards who are passionate about producing wonderful wines in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Many of the vineyards have been visited personally before wines are purchased and the family show a real passion for the way the crops are cultivated and chosen.
With a directory of over 120 exclusive products that includes wines from the likes of Tuscany, Sicily, Bordeaux, Champagne and Mudgee in New South Wales Organi.co.uk lets you choose wines listed by wine type, country, region, grape type and even specific vineyard.
Founder of Organico, Peter Jackson, says:
“At last Organic and biodynamic wine drinking is on the increase and there are so many excellent organic wines and champagnes to choose from – for many years I have heard people talking about and buying organic food but not thinking about organic wine. Why would you cook a delicious organic meal and top it off with a non organic wine which may contain harmful chemical residues.
I think there is the misconception that organic wines are more expensive and not as good and at last that is changing as people realize that excellent organic wines are available and at sensible prices. Other than the pleasure of the taste there are several potential health benefits of drinking organic wines whilst the wildlife across the vineyards works to its natural cycle having not been interrupted by harmful chemicals.”
Organico also boasts the first ever UK shop dedicated to solely organic wine, located in Ambleside in the heart of the Lake District.
Key wines to be found on Organi.co.uk include:
Prosecco del Veneto Empiria 2005 “A great value prosecco from arguably Italy’s best white wine region. A drink much loved by the locals. This prosecco is hugely drinkable with lots of aroma and zing!” Price: £7.50
Colli Della Toscana Centrale Rosso Dominico 2004 “This is the first of Organico’s own ‘branded’ wines. It has a typically rounded and fruity Chianti style withthe subtle addition of 10% Merlot. It is a wine that the Tuscans drink themselves and we consider ourselves fortunate to have managed to persuade them to make a special bottling for our UK clients.” Price: £6.35
Staffa Daunia Rosato Contessa 2006 “This rosato has been created from the Montipulciano grape. A delightful drink on its own or with food it has a lovely pink colour and the wine is reminiscent of wild strawberries and other small red berries. On the palate the wine carries forwardits aromatic character and strikes a perfect balance between velvety soft and crisp.” Price: £6.20

Philglas & Swiggot
A great name for a wine merchant - Philglas and Swiggot. Founded in 1991 the company is unashamedly upmarket with three stores in Richmond-upon-Thames, Marylebone and Battersea. They have been crowned London Wine Merchant of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
When we first started, we believed that there was the need for a good, down to earth, friendly and helpful specialist wine shop offering a range of interesting wines from mostly smaller producers. A sort of antidote to the increasing anonymity and sameness of the big chain stores.
They list a a superb range of wines “cherry-picked from well-known estates and up-and-coming producers”. Australia is their main strength with 160 wines listed. Burgundy, smaller producers only, and Italy, from the approachable to the Super-Tuscans, not far behind in terms of breadth, excitement and interest though.
The Philglas & Swiggot Subscriber Club offers a 12-bottle mixed case with tasting notes (bi-monthly or every 3 months) with prices ranging from £120 up to £250 a case. I have heard some good things about these selections that often include some of the rarer wines from the list.
A good website, although a search facility would be useful, but sadly no online ordering. You can arrange delivery but it would seem they prefer you to pop into one or other of the shops.
A selection of tasting notes on wines stocked by Philglas & Swiggot can be viewed on Spittoon.

Ultimate Wines
The indomitable Paula Sinberg runs the Ultimate Wine Company and for a small operation she manages to gather an impressive range of individualistic and quality wines.
I have had the delight in attending several of her tastings (held locally to me in Marlow, Buckinghamshire and other up in London) and her passion certainly manifests itself. They are a mix of the formal - sit down and the informal, pass the wines around and chat with a light buffet in between batches of wines. In the schedule I note that coming is an Italian Discoveries tasting (30 Nov London, 2 Dec Marlow).
Range-wise all the main countries are covered although the Austrian listing is quit extensive and Italy is an obvious passion. New Zealand offers has several quality wines I haven’t seen listed elsewhere and, interestingly, Portugal has a very good representation too. Although generally pricey the Californian section is extensive, more so than many other specialists.
In amongst the wines several deli items await discovery; these are often included in the light buffet available during the tastings - another reason for going along to one!
