specialist wine merchants listed & mapped! (June 2019)

Ten Green Bottles, Brighton

Recently launched, Ten Green Bottles is an independent Brighton wine merchant offering a wine shop and  tasting room.

The website is refreshingly different and beautifully presented – good navigation, online ordering and lots of atmospherics – it feels like an experience to visit. Focussing on UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy the selection of wines looks really exciting and includes some little known appellations which are producing real quality wines – such as the Cote Roannaise wines of Domaine du Fontenay, Saumur wines from Domaine de la Paleine in the Loire and a Falanghina from Cantina Deltaburno in Campania in Italy.

logoBased in the heart of Brighton, The Wine Shop & Tasting Room offers an eclectic range of wines, great quality food and knowledgeable, personal service. With around 250 bottles from Italy, France, Germany, Spain and England, the wine is the main feature here, all sourced directly from small vineyards and chosen on the basis of exceptional character and quality. You can take a bottle away, open it up and enjoy it at the bar, or have a taste from the many bottles we’ll have open.

Of great regional expression
It’s more important for us that wine accentuates the land that it came from rather than fitting into internationally-marketable models – the term, of course, is ‘terroir’. We like to champion indigenous varieties, whilst not ignoring the fact that international varieties often express terroir just as well.

Combining traditional varieties and methods with innovative, modern wine-making techniques.
In general, there is a move towards authenticity in many things, including wine. It’s important to be sensible about these things, we know that there are some things about tradition that should be thrown away and that there are many benefits to be had from new technology. The best results come from a combination of the lessons of tradition and the innovations of modern technology. In our producers, we look simply for an understanding of what is best for their wine.

A customer commented :Visited The Wine Shop & Tasting Room last week for the first time and I have to say what a great concept this is! I loved being able to try the different wines, chat to the friendly and knowledgeable staff. The bar is done out really well and a very inviting space, so much so, I was in there for a good few hours and sampled some of their food which was equally delicious!

The business is managed by a talented trio with a pedigrees in hospitality, Sommelier, wine-making and wine bars – and they clearly cover all the bases which makes the selection of wines really interesting. This looks to be a quality operation which will be worth watching (and visiting online or in Brighton)

Regular tastings are on offer too.

One of the owners is also a winemaker who runs a Gite, B&B and wine tours in France’s Loire Valley – see frenchvineyard.co.uk
